Background

Riley’s Place was founded in 2008 by a group of caring people from the local community in honor of a young lady named Riley Church who, at the age of 14 died of brain cancer in 2006 after a two-year battle.  Riley’s love of nature and all animals - especially cats, dogs, horses, lambs and goats -  shaped her joyful and compassionate spirit.  When Riley was no longer able to ride horses and spend time with other animals, a group of friends brought a miniature horse to visit her at home. The visit brought healing, joy and fun to Riley, her family and friends and became the inspiration for Riley’s Place and the programs that would bring the same benefits to other children in need. The site-based program and the outreach program are free. Our mission is to serve children with chronic or life threatening illness, children who are homeless, or children who need opportunities to experience or appreciate the healthful benefits of interacting with animals and nature.

Where is Riley's Place?
A wonderful home for Riley’s Place was found in 2009. As a result, Riley’s Place is nestled within the grounds of the renowned National Center for Equine Facilitated Therapy (NCEFT), easily accessible from HWY 280 and Woodside Road. This is the perfect location for a beautiful and comfortable little barn and visiting center that will be a home for our animals and a year round haven for visitors to enjoy them. There will also be an outdoor area for visiting, as well as a relaxing garden for enjoying and appreciating nature. Come and visit the future home of Riley's Place anytime! To arrange for a tour please call or email Wendy Mattes, Executive Director, Riley's Place: wendy@rileys-place.org 650.703.5199.

Wendy was elected to, and currently serves on the Executive Board of the California Dressage Society (CDS). She also served several terms on the San Francisco Peninsula (SFP) Chapter of CDS, in various capacities, including Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Horse Show Committee Chair. Russ Peterson, DVM went to Claremont for undergraduate work, Michigan State for graduate work getting an MS in Nutrition and finally to UC Davis where horses and vet medicine became my focus. When I began practicing in 1978, I knew I wanted to have my own practice. I started Peninsula Equine in the early 80's and realized that the area needed a 24-hr. emergency clinic that also offered "state of the art" diagnostics. At the time, very few practitioners had anything more than a portable x-ray unit and the closest surgery center was UC Davis...a 2.5 hr drive! It took quite a few years to find a location, sift through the red-tape and navigate the permitting processes, but my dream finally came true and in 1992 the Clinic opened its doors for business. I guess I'd have to say that one of the best things about my job is having a "state of the art" facility to practice in. Keeping our facility technologically current has always been important to me so we can offer our clients the best diagnostic tools available. The other part of what I really enjoy is the client interactions. We are very lucky to have such an enthusiastic & knowledgeable client base to work with and know that some of our clients have been using our practice for over 20 years is amazing to me! Now, on a more personal note, when I do have spare time I really enjoy racing cars! I've had several successful seasons and must add that Bayer Animal Health has been a long-time sponsor of STAR Performance Team. I have found that my passion for keeping the horses running during the week is balanced by my passion for keeping my car running on the weekends - both require I stay sharp, stay technologically on top of my game and never forget that in order to do either well, I have to have my heart in it at all times!

Youth Advisory Committee

At Riley’s Place, youth and children are our passion and our mission.  Therefore, youth and children have a central role and say in guiding the direction and management of Riley’s Place.  Getting involved in the youth advisory committee means that kids have wonderful and meaningful opportunities to volunteer in any and all aspects of the organization:  planning and managing events, evaluating and working with/caring for our animals, welcoming our visitors and assisting them with their Play Dates with our animals, designing communication pieces – they can do it all.  They are very involved, have a whole lot of fun, and take a ton of pride in being the touchstone of our organization.  We know that this is what Riley would have wanted.
Everyone is welcome!  To get on board with the Youth Advisory Committee at Riley’s Place, please send Wendy an email:
wendy@rileys-place.org, or the current Committee Chair, Emily Jones, Emilyjones@stanford.edu.
